This pilot project acknowledges the significance of legacy painting to enhance wellbeing of palliative care patients and caregivers, particularly in remote regions, including Bruny Island. The purpose of this project is to work with individuals living with a life-limiting illness, perhaps receiving palliative care, and their loved ones, to co-produce and create an artwork that supports their mental wellbeing and serves as enduring tribute to their lives.

The project outlines the process of co-producing an artwork between individuals seeking to increase their wellbeing through art-making, including palliative care clients, qualified artists and health care professionals. Facilitated by the Foundation in consultation with members of the community with lived experience, together with Dr. Caroline Rannersberger, Co-Director of the Foundation, they will create legacy artworks of professional standards with a depth and quality that will resonate across generations, appreciated by a wide range of audiences.

This project commences with stages 1 and 2, the Legacy Art Journal and Poster respectively. This includes a tailored booklet to guide participants in creating a visual journal, and developing the poster.

In total, the pilot spans four stages and integrates visual art with palliative care to enhance wellbeing and create enduring legacies. Across 12 one-on-one sessions, Caroline and other professionals will work with clients experiencing life-limiting illness to co-produce artworks illustrating their life’s journey. The stages progress through: (1) Art Journal; (2) Legacy Poster; (3) Collaborative Painting; (4) Exhibition. Art is positioned as both a personal expression and a tool for promoting wellbeing. Supporting each session, A series of instructional materials will be produced, including a sample Legacy Art Journal, Poster, and worksheets/booklets. These resources will guide clients in developing visual reflections, and working independently at their own pace.This project builds community capacity to apply professional art practices to wellbeing across palliative and broader health contexts. It delivers meaningful personal legacies and provides adaptable tools for broader health contexts, including dementia care. As such, it has broad reach across generations and diverse patient environments.​
