Legacy Painting

Life's Landscape

Australian artist, curator and legacy painting developer, also qualified in psychological science, Dr. Caroline Rannersberger has built a diverse career as a painter, installation artist, and educator. Based on Bruny Island and in West Hobart, Tasmania, Caroline is represented by Bett Gallery in Hobart, as well as being the Creative Director and founder of the Legacy Art Project.

Caroline's work is held in significant collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, and University of Tasmania. A major achievement in her career was enabled through her work on Indigenous lands, where she was privileged to work with many significant artists, from whom she learned, art was intrinsic to one's being. Through her research and examining her own heritage, she developed the view that one's life's identity is a journey within country, and back. More than a destination, life becomes an infinite series of connections across space and time. To this end, Caroline feels a yet untapped role of art is to support people to take that journey, no matter what stage of life.

Shortlisted for numerous awards, Caroline has worked extensively to support not only her own visual arts career in exhibitions and public art, but also promoted, in her capacity as a founding Director of Bruny Island Foundation for the Arts (BIFA), the careers of many artists.

Since the Foundation's inception in 2014, Caroline has undertaken to elevate opportunities for artists at international standards, right here on Bruny Island, an island off an island (Tasmania) off an Island (Australia). She has curated and facilitated, with the assistance of her husband Mathew Fagan, also a Co-Director and the support of generous benefactors, art prizes with judges of international standing, residencies, including renowned Australian-New York-based musician Sam Nester, and a series of fellowships, resulting in considerable success for all recipients. With the support of the full board of Directors and many volunteers, the fruition of major projects delivered by significant Australian artists have made the Foundation a success.

It is this vein of outstanding achievements that individuals' wellbeing can thrive. Thus Caroline seeks to continue her work supporting the role that the arts play in lifting people up, both in individuals' career advancement, but also in serving communities' wellbeing. Building capacity for people to thrive together through the arts is vital. The gap that exists in making this possible is one that Caroline, through the support of the Foundation, seeks to fill. To this end, the Legacy Painting Project: Life's Landscape, is the vehicle to do so. Through this project, Caroline seeks to forge connections across the arts, community, health and wellbeing. Notably, the palliative care and health sector, with the opportunity for the visual arts to play a significant role in the legacy of individuals, and in bereavement of loved ones, is a major focus.

To this end, the Foundation is delighted to support Caroline's work in forging new paths in the role of the arts in people's health and wellbeing.

CAROLINE RANNERSBERGER

The pilot project outline sees the process broken down into four stages:

Stage 1 is the Legacy Art Journal, taking place over 6 one-hour sessions. The artist and client collaboratively create a visual library of the client’s memories, recorded in an artist quality art journal. Upon completion of the first stage, the client can decide whether they choose to continue.

Stage 2 is the Legacy Art Poster. Over two sessions they create a poster based on the visual library from Stage 1, with options to print multiple archival copies.

Stage 3 is the Legacy Painting. Over four sessions, the client and artist develop a painting on stretched linen. The work is based on the art journal ‘visual library’. There are two options. If the client wishes the artist to make the painting without their involvement, the client will receive an archival print of the finished artwork. Alternatively, the client is actively involved in painting every session and completes most of the artwork themselves with the support of the artist. In this case they will retain the painting.

Stage 4 is an Exhibition. This is organised by the artist with the consent of the artist.
